St. Mathew

Red: The colour of fire and of blood symbolizes love and self-sacrifice. Our lives can never be truly worthwhile, unless our every act and words are inspired by the love of God, and all those with whom we come in contact; and love implies a readiness to make sacrifices and to deny ourselves many pleasures in order to bring greater happiness into the lives of others.

St. Mathew is represented by the animal with a human face because he commences his gospel by tracing the human descent of Jesus. St. Mathew was a very humane person. His gospel is full of the miraculous cures Jesus effected because, undoubtedly, he was struck by the kindness and tenderness Jesus bore towards the ill and the needy.
